Back to the Future Part III ★★★

I've always felt that Back to the Future, Part III was the weakest of the trilogy. I found that to still be the case tonight, though I also found it more entertaining than I remembered feeling about it. I got a few laughs (or, at least, chuckles) out of it this go-round, whereas I didn't laugh at all while watching Part II just before.

I used to find the Doc/Clara romance something of a nonstarter subplot, but tonight I bought into it. Maybe I'm just in a mood. I dunno. It just engaged me more this time than in previous viewings. Part III plays better on its own than does Part II, but it's not as clever or as interesting. There's instead a sense that, having already seen 1955, 1985, alternate 1985, and 2015 that 1885 is merely a fourth dressing of the same story beats. We expect different gags to be repeated, and for the most part they are. It's still amusing, but feels superfluous.
