The Blue Umbrella ★★★

I liked this short. It was deceptively simple, but sweet. It reminded me of golden age Hollywood in a way. I do find it interesting, perhaps even bothersome, that the "quest" is of the blue/"male" umbrella to be united with the red/"female" umbrella. It reduces the woman to being a trophy to be won by the man who slogs his way to her.

There is some redemption that at story's end, the two umbrella users are joined at a table, ostensibly getting to know one another. I'm a feminist anyway, and I guess watching this with my 11 year old niece made me even more conscious that it would just be nice to see a break from the boy meets girl/boy goes on adventure/boy wins girl trope.
