Travis Danner’s review published on Letterboxd:
The big boxing scene is surprisingly brutal in its Hagler/Hearns esque frenzy of blood, sweat and haymakers. It legit looks like two guys pounding each other into hamburger meat.
Robert Wise directs the hell out of this and Robert Ryan has a very pleasing mix of macho and vulnerable.
One thing I love about The Set-Up, and a lot of the good stuff in the film noir genre, is that this is a completely satisfying narrative experience coming in at a nice, cool 73 minutes. I’m definitely on team more efficiently plotted films with shorter runtimes.
