You can never go wrong with a good slasher. Very pleased that this holds up two years later.

The Black Phone 2021
Completely support Derrickson going back to this lean, mean style over his small foray into blockbusters. Stories like this suit his style so much more. Though its supernatural element tends to falter until its climactic point, the wonderful use of tension, world-building, generational trauma, and likable characters (and likable child actors!) more than make up for it. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Ethan Hawke's chilling turn as the Grabber, who no doubt will join the pantheon of iconic modern villains very soon. Really solid stuff.

Do I acknowledge this is objectively a bad movie? Yes.
Can I fully hate it? Never.

The Souvenir: Part II 2021
Thoughtful meditations on the artistic process in regards to how it affects your personal life. This is exactly how all autobiographical films should be made from now on. Blew me clear away.

Jackass: The Movie 2002
If there’s anything indicative of 2000s culture and the peak lunacy therein, it’s Jackass. You just can’t help but admire how stupidly sincere it all is, but also how intricate a lot of these stunts are.

Obi-Wan Kenobi 2022
Listen, fanservice is good when I’m the fan being serviced. I would very much be okay with them just staying in the prequel era from now on.

Cha Cha Real Smooth 2022
Realizing that Cooper Raiff is not only yet another one of my doppelgängers, but actually is me had I continued acting/directing right out of college is a shock to the system to say the least. But I'll be damned if what he makes isn't absolutely charming.
Can't be mad at the dude for being legitimately good at what he does, this early in his career.

Captain Marvel 2019
How nice of Disney to give Thor: The Dark World some competition in the “fumbling the bag” category
