gonzo multimodal anthropologist.
sometimes i make films too.
As a sucker for Hamlet, I was the target audience for a retelling of the Legend of Amleth, the inspiration for Shakespeare’s play. The story is a bit reductive and repetitive, as most ancient myths are, but the art direction in this kept me enraptured the whole time. There were many times the aesthetic reminded me of The Fountain, which delighted me to no end.
Sweet Jesus, Jake Gyllenhaal brings it in this film as Louis Bloom. I was completely convinced that he was a sociopath from his gaze that holds for just a little too long, to his highly analytical and fast talking dialogue that just sounds like Bloom is attempting to sound normal, to his love for matriarchal figures that he can manipulate. Actually, scratch that, he is somehow able to manipulate every single person in this film.
It shouldn't be a surprise…
