TIFF 2022: Film #15
While I didn’t particularly enjoy my experience watching All Quiet on the Western Front and it certainly won’t be ranking among my favourites of the year, this is a excruciatingly brutal, but masterfully crafted war film that ranks among the most technically impressive the genre has ever seen. Jaw-dropping cinematography that makes the film feel so immersive. Unlike 1917 and other war films, there’s nothing to latch on to - but that’s the point. War is brutal and cold and uncompromising and this film captures all of that. It’s an absolutely massive production, so I could see this doing well on Netflix and being a major player once awards season hits.
