Apparently, The Batman is Gotham’s Top Cop.

Perhaps by virtue of my (in retrospect) unearned expectations, I was disappointed by just how politically conservative this was. I understand the film was both written and filmed before the largest mass civil rights protest in American history, a movement that familiarised many with what it would mean to defund the police. And it was also filmed before COVID saw the world’s richest get exponentially richer, while millions died, working people were being…

The quiet Marxism of Sally Rooney is something to behold. She captures the irrepressible and oppressive state of "millennial" culture in her absolutely sublime novel, and now this series.

One of the most profound examples is a seemingly small miscommunication between Connell and Marianne. Connell can't afford rent and when he tells Marianne, she doesn't understand the implication behind his admittance. Here is Marianne, living rent free in a townhouse in the heart of Dublin, and a young man feeling…

I feel mean critiquing this too harshly but this screams FIRST MOVIE (edit: it's the directors second feature and I felt less mean by the end). There are moments where I'm like yeah there's something here. But it consistently flounders in its own righteous self-importance, and dour moodiness. And it just fails at the fundamentals: the ugly colour grading, godawful and intrusive music, haphazard plotting, and atrocious dialogue. The actors try to sell it, so the blame mostly lies behind…

This was so desperate to be an epic love story, replete with the corniest piano solos and jarring use of free form jazz. It's extraordinarily soapy, sans any self-awareness. The flashback structure is odd.. it amounts to nothing? It's bizarrely abandoned when the film's timeline reaches this dramatic point. But so many scenes felt like that - they barely establish context and a distinct lack of buildup to its most dramatic beats. Halfway through the two characters seemingly switch roles…
