  We can think we know someone. Their smell, their smile, their embarrassing little dance.

  Aftersun is surreptitiously devastating and stunning in its seeming simplicity. Two profound performances anchor a story lost and found in ellipses, and the meaning we make of memories we grasp desperately at to understand. Memories whose fragments flash on a chaotic dancefloor, soar on the wings of a parasail watched from afar, and resonate in hazy and shaky camcorder footage.

  Blessed be another Boots Riley bizarre and beguiling trip into anti-capitalist didacticism and obtuse surrealism. With The Boys increasingly becoming what it was once satirising, I'm A Virgo is a particularly welcome dissection of the status quo affirming genre of superhero conservatism.

  And what a coincidence, my superpower is also an ability to explain the ravages of capitalism and absolutely convince the receiver in one obnoxious conversation 🙌

  This was so desperate to be an epic love story, replete with the corniest piano solos and jarring use of free form jazz. It's extraordinarily soapy, sans any self-awareness. The flashback structure is odd.. it amounts to nothing? It's bizarrely abandoned when the film's timeline reaches this dramatic point. But so many scenes felt like that - they barely establish context and a distinct lack of buildup to its most dramatic beats. Halfway through the two characters seemingly switch roles…
