Once upon a Tom in Hollywood’s review published on Letterboxd:
Fate is just another word for bad luck.
Why I Watched: An impressive trailer, a stellar cast, and an opportunity to get in on a preview screening before the wide release.
Review: The primary cast of this rollicking actioner by the director who brought you Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2 already feels like a spare-no-expense extravaganza going in. But as additional hidden characters reveal themselves one after another after another... after another, the whole production starts to feel like "Called-in Favors, The Movie." Brad Pitt is pretty good, but the lead character he's playing is not as much fun as he should be for this kind of movie to fire on all cylinders. Both the action and the humor have their moments but ultimately fall a little flat. I did enjoy several of the supporting performances, notably Brian Tyree Henry and Hiroyuki Sanada. The film's biggest flaw is the casual way that massive amounts of collateral destruction seem to have no impact on any actual living human beings, least of all the central characters. Suspension of disbelief is an extremely difficult task when things this ludicrous are so readily able to be brushed aside.
Verdict: Unless you've exhausted all the other better options in theaters, this is pretty Skippable.
Opening Friday in theaters.
