Interview with the Vampire

Interview with the Vampire ★★★

I was far too young when I saw this for the first time. That throat-slasher scene has stuck with me ever since. Even now it still seems particularly savage.

What wasn’t apparent to me then was just how gloriously camp this is. It’s essentially Cruise and Pitt traipsing about in silly wigs and frilly frocks, brooding in dimly-lit rooms and pouting furiously. They spend a good ten minutes at the start just necking with one another, and just when you think it can’t get any better, Antonio Banderas rocks up with those luscious flowing locks and that resplendent robe of crimson velvet. It’s enough to let me overlook just how naff everything else is.

One thing is distinctly lacking, and that is more scenes of Cruise in his slowly-decomposing-swamp-vampire state.
