The Mitchells vs. The Machines

The Mitchells vs. The Machines ★★★★

What a delightful movie, and what an unexpected treat from an animation that, on the surface, looked to me like fairly generic fare. If it weren’t for all the recent praise on LB, I likely would have glanced over this on Netflix and simply brushed it aside. So glad that I didn’t. A prime example of why you should never judge a book by its cover; nor a movie by its poster.

It is, not surprisingly, completely riddled with clichés—a father who can’t connect with his daughter; a daughter who feels like her dad doesn’t support her interests; a weirdo sibling who’s just there to be weird; and a mum who... makes the sandwiches and does mum stuff. But it’s all forgiven simply because the whole thing is an utter blast from start to finish. Plus it’s genuinely funny and completely bonkers, which always helps. The mall sequence with the killer Furbies simultaneously brought back nightmares and left me in stitches. Just brilliant.
