Much thanks to Wood for giving some random idiot named "Turd Crapley" a chance to host this thing. I'll try my best to not let you all down.
I've been participating in the Scavenger Hunt since October 2017, and although my performance has been a mixed bag depending on my work schedule - with failure being much more common than success - the Scavenger Hunts have legitimately directed me towards amazing films which I would have never seen without the Hunt providing an impetus. Hopefully, Hunt #51 also leads you to at least one great film that you would have otherwise missed. (The Scavenger Hunts have also led me to garbage like "Cool Cat Saves the Kids," but you take the bad with the good.)
I have designed this list to reflect a mix of A) my cinematic interests, B) my random personal interests, C) my interest in social justice, and D) whimsical bullshit. I prefer Scavenger Hunts in which the tasks are a little bit less "directive," so hopefully, the tasks in Hunt #51 will provide gentle guidance, but still allow you the flexibility to choose films that legitimately look interesting to you.
I have provided the list of tasks in two forms: 1) A verbose version that explains the rationale for each task, and 2) a no-bullshit version that just provides the tasks. Copy-paste the one that suits your tastes.
Tasks are after the instructions. (I have copy-pasted the instructions from Wood's Master List. You should leave a comment on the master list if you want alerts for future Scavenger Hunts.)
RULES
What is a scavenger hunt?
Scavenger hunts are a popular and fun challenge undertaken by Letterboxd users where the aim for each participant is to watch and review about 30 different films in the space of one month, based on specific criteria. The host for each month crafts about 30 different tasks, each for which participants must find a film, ranging in variety and difficulty.
How do I participate?
All you have to do is create your own list that fills the criteria of the hunt, and then post the link to your list in the comments on this thread. Once you have done that, I will add your name and your list at the top of this page, and once we get underway, you simply have to watch and review each of your chosen films as you watch them. Be sure to include a link back to this thread in your own list, so that others can participate if they want to do so. Also, make sure you number your lists so that different lists can be cross-referenced easily. (I would also recommend adding the respective tasks to the comments of each film on your list.)
What other rules are there?
The majority of films that you watch should be previously unseen - at least 25 out of 30 seems reasonable - and all films (unless specified) must be feature-length (i.e., 60+ mins). You can't use one film for more than one task. You should also make it clear at the top of each review that you watched the film as part of this challenge.
Anything else?
Reviews in other languages are allowed. Also, you can watch your chosen films in any order, and you are allowed to change your list at any given time, providing your choice meets the criterion in question.
What else can I do?
These Scavenger Hunts are designed to be community-based challenges, so please take the time to read, comment, and like the lists and reviews of others. It makes the whole shebang much more enjoyable if we all take the time to interact with one another. Also, be sure to tag each of your lists and reviews with the terms "scavenger hunt" and "scavenger hunt [number]" so others can find them with ease.
Here are the tasks!
1. Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1st, so go ahead and watch a movie that stars someone who began their career as a model.
2. Watch a movie that features a professional wrestler or former professional wrestler who is not the Rock, and which was not produced by WWE Studios.
3. It's June, so watch a movie that stars either Elaine May or Miranda July.
4. Watch a movie about two characters who yearn for each other romantically but who are unable or unwilling to act on those feelings because of external factors. (Think "Romeo and Juliet" or "Remains of the Day.")
5. Watch a South Korean romantic comedy or melodrama. (Knowing the Koreans, it is very possible that the movie will be both.)
6. Watch a teen comedy from the 80's or the 90's.
7. In honor of Prince's birthday on June 7th, watch a movie that is set primarily in Minnesota.
8. Watch a movie that features an actor or actress who is clearly trying to break typecasting.
9. In dubious honor of 6/9, watch a movie that involves sexual kink or fetish.
10. Scavenger Hunts tend to be heavy on the horror-themed challenges, but I personally hate the genre, so let's compromise. Watch a non-horror movie that was directed by someone who is primarily known for directing horror films.
11. Walter Chaw of Film Freak Central has been my favorite film critic for two decades now, and no one writes a more hilarious pan. Watch a film that Walter Chaw gave zero stars. (Hopefully, there are no hurt feelings, because he has also hated a lot of films that I love.)
12. Watch a movie that has been featured in Nathan Rabin's "My World of Flops" column.
13. Watch a movie that was lovingly (or not so lovingly) dissected on the "We Hate Movies" podcast.
14. To "commemorate" Donald Trump's birthday on June 14th, watch a movie about fighting back against corrupt politicians.
15. Take any film that is listed as a "Favorite Film" on your Letterboxd profile, and watch a movie by the director that you have not seen yet.
16. Watch a movie that has an animal in the title but is not actually about that animal in any significant way.
17. Dads are often portrayed in the movies as stupid or abusive, but in honor of Father's Day, watch a movie featuring a father who is primarily portrayed as loving or competent (from what you can tell from the synopsis).
18. Sally Ride became the first American woman in space on June 18th, 1963. Watch a movie about a woman (or women) attempting to break into a male-dominated field, job, occupation, domain, etc.
19. In honor of personal hero Dirk Nowitzki, whose birthday is on June 19th, watch a German film from either 1998 (when he first entered the NBA), 2007 (when he won the MVP Award), 2011 (when he won the NBA championship), or 2019 (when we finally retired).
20. Watch a movie featuring either your favorite film-score composer or your favorite cinematographer. (If you don't already have one, then now is the time to form an opinion.)
21. Watch a movie in which a significant role was whitewashed.
22. Pay respect to my homegirls Sarah McLachlan, Kacey Musgraves, Jenny Lewis, and Hope Sandoval by watching a movie that features a song by Sarah McLachlan, Kacey Musgraves, Rilo Kiley, or Mazzy Star.
23. Watch a movie for which the poster features the "buddyback" pose, i.e., my favorite dumb movie-poster cliché. (This will most likely be a buddy-cop movie or a bad romantic comedy.)
24. Watch a movie from a country in Asia or Africa that was directed by a woman.
25. Michael Jackson died 10 years ago on June 25th. Watch a movie that stars a child or teen actor who eventually became tabloid fodder when they became older, but make sure that the film is from when they hadn't yet fallen victim to fame.
26. Watch a movie starring an actor or actress who you think should be a much bigger deal than they currently are.
27. Watch a movie that you would honestly have little interest in watching except for the fact that it starts an actor/actress who you find attractive (physically or otherwise).
28. The Stonewall Riots occurred 50 years ago on June 28th, 1969. Watch a movie about a member of the LGBTQ+ community fighting against homophobia. (The homophobia can be intimate or institutional in scope.)
29. Watch a movie that you were initially anticipating, but for which your enthusiasm disappeared after the critical reception was less than stellar (and perhaps outright terrible).
30. For those of you who think my username is needlessly crude, "Turd Crapley" is actually a reference to the dearly missed "Parks and Recreation." Please watch a movie that features either Amy Poehler or Adam Scott in an important role.
The no-bullshit version!
1. Watch a movie that stars someone who began their career as a model.
2. Watch a movie that features a professional wrestler or former professional wrestler who is not the Rock, and which was not produced by WWE Studios.
3. Watch a movie that stars either Elaine May or Miranda July.
