River of Grass

River of Grass ★★★

You've heard of the unreliable narrator -- River of Grass gives us the unsympathetic, aimless narrator. Honestly, I don't know how Cozy managed to get married or have kids, it's such an effort for her to do anything at all. Having grown up in South Florida, I'll say that Reichardt perfectly captures a certain character: maybe it's the heat, the flatness, the presence of so many people just passing through, I don't know. (Can you tell I don't really miss it?) The acting is uneven, and Reichardt had not quite honed her style yet, but she effectively portrays a slice of life. It's just not a particularly interesting one.
