  • Roma

I can't deny that Roma is a technical masterpiece, near perfection in every sense as far as its sound (mixing, editing) goes and the camera is spectacular, Cuaron found a lot of ways of making a simple pan left to right quite interesting. I think my problem with Roma may be with the length, I quite admire that Gravity and Children of Men are both under 110 minutes, whereas Roma is 135 minutes, and I don't think it needs to…

    Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is as close to animation and superhero perfection we'll ever get, it nails absolutely everything that it sets out to do, it's emotionally layered, with one of the most likable protagonists in years, side characters with actual reasons to care about, same with the villains. The actual animation is kinetic and constantly beautiful, also a scene near the end with Miles Morales completely took my breath away and gave me chills like nothing else I've seen…

    Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Fallen Kingdom is a real mixed bag for me, I loved the action sequences and the SFX were incredible, and there were a lot of thrilling moments, with some semi cheesy plot points and lines of dialogue. But the villains are so awful, Rafe Spall and Toby Jones are hamming it up so much at the end, Ted Levine is just so bad, but the Indoraptor was cool. The script/screenplay is also pretty weak, some baffling character choices occur in the second half. Characterization was fine, better than Jurassic World. I had a lot of fun with Fallen Kingdom but it is very flawed.

  • Monster

Damn, what an outstanding performance from Charlize Theron, whose performance is so full on and physical, she completely owns this role and deserves that Oscar, Christina Ricci is also strong in the supporting role, these two characters are what make Monster work so well. The whole movie relies on these two characters having a strong bond throughout, and seeing that bond fall apart when things get ugly. I thought Patty Jenkins' direction was also very strong and the soundtrack was great.
