Guru Dutt's first "contribution" to the Parallel cinema movement. The lyrical style finds its influence most closely associated with French poetic realism in 1930s. The highly emotive singing lyrics marks the difference. In addition, Vijay's existential concern grows from personal to materialistic post-independence Indian society. The expressionistic camera and montages never stray too far away from our hero's humanistic eyes.
