Daniel C. Pearl is one of my favorite Cinematographers for shooting well-constructed, great-looking horror films. He is especially good at interior work and shifting light and shadow, reflected light a plus. There is a depth of field and an almost tactile third dimension, as if a shot could be frozen and one might be able to feel around back of it, or tilt it to the side and see it from all angles. Fluidity and attention to detail balance absorption in the immediate with a need to follow along with narrative cues and requirements. Despite being mentioned quite often in Texas Chainsaw Massacre reviews (and in my case Marcus Nispel fervor), I felt he deserved an extra notice for The Boy wherein what he does extends far beyond mere admiration on my part into rapt focus.
