I, Tonya

I, Tonya ★★★★½

virtually perfect across the board. don't think there will ever be a better film about celebrity image and America's love/hate relationship with subjects of the seemingly endless media circus than I, Tonya. the formality of its sympathy towards Tonya as a martyr to American idealization doubling as a heartbreaking look into abuse and the trauma that comes with it, and how that trauma manifests itself in aspects of one's life is fucking crushing and the script nails that home in spectacularly devastating fashion. the ending in particular is an absolute editing masterclass that hits me like a brick in the face every time. the skating sequences carry so much weight in every movement, i swear, the viewer can actually feel the physicality of her jumps and the devastating impact of her falls. this movie is a miraculous triple axel.
