Cría cuervos is honestly one of the most beautiful films that I’ve ever seen, and after revisiting it (this time in 35mm), I can easily say it’s a top 10 movie for me. It’s an incredibly moving childhood story about grief, readjusting to new environments, and an obsession with death. Children don’t typically think about death at such an early age, but it is sort of forced upon the central girl character, Ana, who witnessed the incredible pain her mother…

    Q&A w/ Béla Tarr

When the moderator turned the questions over to the audience, I managed to get my hand up.

“What do you see when you look out your window?” I asked Béla.

For context, there are several movies of his, including Damnation, where his characters gaze out of windows for long durations. He films his characters spectating the world, even if what they’re looking at is not very interesting.…

Hosted a movie night and showed this gem to the group. I had only seen Larisa Shepitko’s The Ascent, which is a personal favorite, so I was very much looking forward to seeing/showing this one, especially since it’s on Paul Schrader’s top 10 list from Criterion. If you don’t read the description for the film, Wings might be a confounding experience since its key subject matter related to the heroine’s past doesn’t reveal itself right away. It’s almost buried, with…

This has to be my favorite Aubrey Plaza performance (besides the one in Legion). She really does have a lot of range - as a nihilist in the first segment of the film, and especially in the second segment when she plays an actor who’s emotionally manipulated by the director during the shoot, all so that he may get a great performance out of her. She oscillates between lows and extremes, astuteness and drunkenness. She’s fabulous!

I’m one of the few people who didn’t think this was funny. Maybe one or two chuckles, but that’s it. Everyone else in the theater was having a good time, though. I think this film relies too much on humor that it forgets about other aspects, like story and logic. And if the humor doesn't work for you, then you will most likely lose interest very quickly. Despite its frenetic pacing and good performances, the film ended up being way too silly for me to buy into it.

I don’t know why, but I would like to see something like this in the vein of I Saw the Devil, where an aggressive mini electric car driver tries to outsmart/provoke a psychotic tanker truck driver.
