I was torn between a 3.5 and a 4 for this one. There’s some really good stuff here, with an amazing atmosphere of isolation and despair, but there’re some moments that just weren’t played to their full potential. In the works of Scorsese that Phillips seems so deeply in love with, for all the moments of violence, dread, and creeping insanity, there were also moments of awkwardness on par with the works of Todd Solonz that really emphasized the movie’s…

I watched this so you wouldn’t have to. I knew it would be bad, but somehow it was even worse than I expected. Much worse.

    Ad Astra

My CFI cancelled my lesson today because of cloud cover, and I figured this would be the closest substitute.

I am the main character of this movie. I, too, want to go into space because I hate people touching me *that* much.

  • It Chapter Two

    It Chapter Two

Starts off as totally trash, then gradually gets more engaging as it goes on until the third act, which is tons of fun, but definitely didn’t warrant the 2-hour build-up. The problems from chapter 1 are even worse, with tonal unevenness and pacing issues drowning the first two acts, but a few moments of amazing horror-comedy manage to shine through. More than anything, the film seemed to suffer from a misunderstanding of what Stephen King material should and shouldn’t be…

Round 4! Shoutout to the cricket that was chillin’ in the theater and added an extra layer of sound effects to the whole ordeal.

    Some observations:

The following piece of dialogue is heard just after Dani and the boys arrive at the community:
    ‘What are the children playing?’
    ‘Skin the fool.’
    I’ll let y’all put 2 and 2 together.

How come no one talks about the fourth wall break during the Attestupan sequence? That horn-player deadass turns around and looks…

‘Let me introduce my brother, Ingmar.’

Very interesting. There’s some stuff I think they could’ve done a little more with, but, honestly? I had a ton of fun watching this in a little movie theater in Spain, even if the Swedish was subtitled in Spanish instead of English. There’s a lot going on here to say the least, and I’m gonna need to see it another half dozen or so times before I can begin to talk about it, but for now I’ll just ask why no one’s comparing this to A Field in England, another deliciously psychedelic horror film from the past decade or so.
