+ Astounding cinematography. There is a shot in the museum involving reflections and smoke that literally took my breath away. Other inventive scenes: framing with the inside of a hand, that slow tracking shot with the fish tank, etc.

    + Flashy, snappy editing

    + Fantastic performance from Bernal

    + That ridiculous fight scene

This is at once a dizzying heist movie but also a meditative road trip film. How Alonso Ruizpalacious pulled this off is a wonder to me.

First ten minutes destroyed me with a live-action version of Up.

    Okja

    ★★★★

Everything about the film is turned up to 10 -- the acting, the writing, and the ridiculously high budget (for such a weird film). Unfortunately, Gyllenhaal turned it up to a 12.

Not since Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending has a performance been so thoroughly off the mark. You want to look away because it's embarrassing, but you can't keep your eyes off of it because of how magnetically insane it is. And the film is even more glorious because of it.

    A real high-water mark for 2017.

    ★★½

There's something glossy and inauthentic about 'Patti Cake$'.

I think it should have been shot on 16mm -- it lacks grit.
