Perception and deception - the development of the Self

In the following, I will discuss the events of the movie, which will contain a lot of spoilers.

How do we perceive beauty? We so often view it as a physical thing. Normally beauty is part of the subjectivity of the perceiver but every so often you can see it as an objective feature like color for example, which nonetheless needs to be perceived. So what do we mean by beauty? …

Around 8 years ago, a close friend of mine, now living in Australia, messaged me about this film she just stumbled upon. I don’t know her exact words anymore but it was something like: “Vanessa, I know you love fucked up movies and you definitely have to see this one.”
I don’t know why I didn’t see it immediately back then. Many years have passed and a lot of stuff has happened. There were times where I turned on the…

    After Life

    ★½

For a movie that deals with supernatural aspects, After Life is indeed very down to earth. Whilst I somewhat enjoyed listening to each deceased individual in the beginning, it became way too repetitive and boring. Strangely enough, these scenes reminded me a lot of the beginning of Gaspar Noé’s Climax

I don’t even know how to start this review and where to begin with all the issues I had with it. Firstly, despite some obvious flaws I enjoyed the first 30 minutes a lot. But from there on it went downhill real quick. Within the first hour most of the plot is revealed in a monotonous confession by the teacher which takes away most of the tension from the following plot. The whole movie literally mocks with mothers, children, teachers…

“Some people were born just so they could be buried.”

From the start, you will realize that it will be a long movie, with already being more than two hours long. It’s a slow burn movie with a great story and definitely great acting. It’s carried by a terrific, absolutely perfect casting. Tom Holland is undoubtedly the biggest surprise by delivering a part of him that no one had seen before. His character’s personality is shaped based on his traumatic…
