The story is wonderfully complicated and the themes are interesting.

    That Time of Year

I dislike so many danish films for being edgy on purpuse by only including weird characters that doesn't exist in real life. In this movie Paprika Steen, however, grounds the danish film industry with a project that is both simple and deep at the same time. The characters are really, really well made and complex. Every time a character had a new line i caught myself thinking "of course he said that. That is exactly what my relative would do…

  • Halloween

This film actually managed to stay incredibly true to the original. The score, the camera work, the acting, the plot. Everything comes together and makes a worthy sequel to the original slasher film.
It does have a few issues here and there but most of them are issues with the slasher genre in general.

  • Hell or High Water

    Hell or High Water

This movie is the proof of what you can achieve if you 'settle' for perfecting a genre. It isn't new nor is it original.
It is, however, exciting, filled with consequence for the actions of the characters, gourgeous as hell and has a score that makes you want to visit texas. Oh and it is not condescending at all which is a breath of fresh air in the exposition smog that is Hollywood.

  • Stand by Me

    Stand by Me

This film is innosence incarnate. It's a feel good film with a twist of social realism without getting soppy. It has all the charm or a Stephen King novel and a director who isn't afraid to take his time to show all the good times between four young friends.

  • Jaws

I sometimes think that all the new technology today has lead to less creativity in movies. I know of course that this is wrong. Movies like Mad Max: Fury Road is a testament to that. However, I feel like back in 1975 you simply had to come up with great workarounds instead of just using cgi for everything. The first half of Jaws where you never see the shark is amazing (thanks in large to Williams' score). The third act…

  • Back to the Future

    Back to the Future

I had never seen this one before but I get why it's a classic. Some good fun and lovely characters.

  • Aliens

This is a fine film and definitely one to watch. However, I will never get the discussion wether or not this is better than Alien: the 8th passenger. I love how Aliens take an original movie and actually creates an original sequel and not just a cheap copy. However, Aliens is far too long for an action movie (especially the DC). I get bored so many times during this movie even though I love the actions scenes themselves.

With this film S. Craig Zahler made me look so much forward to seeing what genre he is gonna use to pull me through the next satis/horifying revenge movie. I love everything about this film and together with Bone Tomahawk it has made Zahler one of my favorite new directors right next to Jeremy Saulnier.

  • Se7en

The best film in the genre. It's been copied so many times that it almost seems cliché today. Kevin spacey and the last 10 minutes are what makes the film more than just your average police investigation movie.
