the romance genre naturally gravitates toward happy endings because why wouldnt it, everybody loves those stories, including me. but exploring different kinds of relationships, doomed ones & failing ones, is something that wong kar-wai can do so well and beautifully and tenderly. mrs chan and mr chow were doomed from the start and they knew it but they, like i and many other people have done a million times before, prioritized love and genuine connection over reality because how could they not? neither expected to fall in love, neither expected for the heartbreak to run that deep in that fleeting relationship but it did. the rain/tunnel scene is one of the most romantic and heartbreaking scenes i think ive seen. i love love
