My partner and I sat slackjawed, in awe, stunned at the entire back half of this movie. She's actually not super into giallo, but has enjoyed my budding fixation over the past few years and tuned into more than a few by now. We had an ongoing discussion on whether this was actually a giallo or not due to being a Spanish co-production. We settled on if one were to apply phrenology and blood purity to an inherently iconoclastic genre,…

The Flash 2023
The multiverse is a perverse fantasy that runs the risk of homogenizing everything we know and love. It strips meaning and context away from characters and their stories to leave nothing but a mascot suit. I'm afraid with each revisit Across The Spider-Verse the illusion will shatter and I'll be left with a multi-colored prism of stuff - just stuff, no context, no flavor, just suits and catchphrases. Because these sort of stories ultimately rip threads from tapestries and leave…

Voices 2007
Never truly awful but never comes into its own to justify its own existence. The messaging is too muddled and themes too overt to scry much further beyond what is stated. Bitterness is like grief in that it can perpetuate - like a sickness - and take you down a dark path towards resentment. A theme since time immemorial, and though always salient it feels hokey and hackey here. Mostly a by the numbers showcase of murder and other unpleasantries…

The Mother of Tears 2007
Surreal dreamic resonance tuned to the frequency of symphonic nu-mutal. Leering and sneering modern witches wreaking havoc in the name of their perverse mother. Early aughts music video CG melded with extreme gore, bound in a pagan tome, inked in thick slimy blood. Like lucid dreaming, uncanny and off-putting, more than a little ridiculous. Accept the illusion for what it is and you'll scry some of its deeper truth. As it stands, a beautiful picture and an Argento where he doesn't lose his sight of his own ability to let go and conjure against logic.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2023
The future of animation is bleak. The past is checkmarked with ambitious failures and low budget gems steamrolled by fluff and product. And even then, even the good product - like Transformers The Movie - doesn't always succeed. As the decades have worn on, shiny and unfeeling CG dross has taken over a once radiant medium.
This is how we arrive at The Super Mario Bros. Movie, soullessly calculated to make you think about a portfolio of brands you like.…

The Love Witch 2016
This is one of the most insufferable movies I've ever watched. That may sound facetious, but I mean it with total sincerity.
Anna Biller pilfers liberally from 70s films (most of which, by her own admission, she hasn't seen) to bring her gender essentialist, weak tea sexual politics to life. Meanwhile, she blatantly appropriates real spiritual beliefs for aesthetics while saying very toxic things about them. Her script's depiction of the craft is embarrassing, fascile, and full of inaccuracies. It's…
