To Have and Have Not ★★★★½

It clicked for me this time. I still am not particularly fond of a few elements (the antagonists, the musical numbers) but the scenes between Bogey and Bacall are superb––far richer than I previously noted, far more complex––and the lighting is, along with that of ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS, perhaps the best in all of Hawks.

Bacall and Bogart look forward to Feathers and John T. in RIO BRAVO, and Walter Brennan essentially plays the same role in both films.
