River of Grass

River of Grass ★★½

Reichardt's debut, a sort of mid-90s Sun Don’t Shine: a microbudgeted 16mm mismatched-couple-on-the-run story, set in mostly in motels around the Everglades, with a disaffected housewife as the lead. Like a lot of the period’s more sign- and theory-conscious indies, it attempts to combine pulp / genre tropes (lam movies, ‘70s cop shows, etc.) with a performance and camera style which eschews conventional “affectations.” More of an idea for a movie than a movie.
