White Fawn's Devotion: A Play Acted by a Tribe of Red Indians in America ★★

Borderline-psychotic Western melodrama: man inherits fortune, his wife tries to commit suicide believing that he’ll leave her, their daughter walks in and believes her father has attacked her mother, etc., etc. Director James Young Deer came from a multiracial background, but “passed” professionally as a Winnebago; his treatment of settler-native relations (the husband is white, the wife Indian) is notable, though hardly nuanced.
