The Great Mouse Detective ★★★½

Made on the relative cheap, and it literally shows, as this production history details: "A scene of Basil and Dawson scampering through a convoluted pipe system chasing Fidget the bat is accomplished not by showing the characters, but by the camera panning over the background painting of the outside of the pipe." But that can only be a good thing imo: this is fast and clever — not exactly "funny" in the gag-man sense, but with a real sense of relish in resurrecting Holmesian cliches and various tropes of the old-fashioned British mystery (bonus points for the "seedy waterfront pub" bit). Vim and vigor that's child-friendly but not particularly child-oriented, and Big Ben's CGI clock gears are still pretty impressive.
