Nightmare modernism. The visual design of this film is astonishing. Though its content may be disagreeable, there is an absolute synthetic unity in its organisation and expression. It is also very much a 'movie', a space of desire and belief, which makes the unreal seem ordinary and possible. Cinema can do many things, and Hollywood and American cinema always have these things circulating in their system, like a tendency in the bones or blood, sometimes it becomes particularly pronounced. These days it just takes the form of Superhero mega-blockbusters, and no one really notices or cares.
