I believe C.H.U.D. means well. I really do, but the idea that three white guys, an artist, a disenfranchised member of the establishment, and a social activist, are all that can stop the Government and Big Business from turning New York City into a toxic waste dump was tone deaf even in the mid-1980s. Sure, a George Romero or a Larry Cohen would have brought some much needed diversity and insight to the table, but this Shakespeare in the Sewer monster movie still manages to be a whole lot of fun. C.H.U.D. asks you to think a little, but not too much.
