David Ayer can craft an aesthetically pleasing movie and the performance work is at least admirable (Shia chews the scenery like no other), but it's another vapid effort that parades over-the-top violence under the guise of a contrived pursuit for honor. A better script could have tapped into the problematic culture of crime and its lineage of victims, but Ayers is not that man.
