There is an interview with Jia Zhangke on YouTube about this movie, which provides a great deal of context and insight.

Jia says, "I wanted to make a movie about time, how time wears man down...I feel that a person will forget a lot of things as he goes through life. We wouldn't be able to remember the forgotten things." The narrative style coupled with the editing really drives these ideas home: scenes and images come and go with large…

    The Babadook

I like to watch this movie from the perspective that the babadook is a complete fiction of this crazy woman's imagination as she can no longer cope with the death of her husband, and she's just horribly abusive and neglectful towards her child. Makes the movie a lot more interesting.

Also, The Babadook is a groundbreaking moment in film history, being the first non-explicitly LGBTQ branded movie to ever be called gay by a computer algorithm.

I think I caught this one as a matinee at the West 4th Street IFC Center. Really engrossing movie, an enlightened mixture of abandoned building / infrastructure porn, political/economic critique, and human interest journalism. Bombay Beach

A very beautiful, desolate vibes movie. I remember the day I watched it very well. A new friend I made while studying abroad had invited me to hang out with him; it was our first time together back in New York. I was feeling some anxiety that somehow our friendship was conditioned by this experience we had together abroad, and that it wouldn't work well now that we were back home. Before heading out to meet him, I drew the…
