In the Mood for Love

In the Mood for Love ★★★★★

Wong Kar-wai’s seventh feature is a tone poem capturing the somber tragedy of missed connections, all stolen glances and subtle gestures. Oversaturated greens and reds and slick but restrictive ‘60s fashion nicely complement the thematic fixation on quiet repression and denial, and there’s so many rainy reflections that the characters feel like ghosts passing through one another in an otherworldly nighttime dreamscape. Maggie Cheung says so much with so little.
