Refn’s images and use of color are undeniably gorgeous and fashion photo shoots prove a perfect setting for his talents. Here, his penchant for inertly posing his actors feels much more natural, as opposed to the way the same tactic stalled out his prior effort, Only God Forgives. The Neon Demon includes some of 2016’s most stunning imagery.…

    A charming film that gets the details and rhythms (playfulness, boredom, anger & longing) of a child's small-town life exactly right. The (apparently) non-professional actors are all excellent, while the direction and writing lets the "magical realism" spring from the emotion of the characters, rather than overwhelm it. Happy to have stumbled on this film as part of the city's international screening program.
