A space adventure tale that's sweeping scale, gargantuan concepts and thematic resonance are often undercut by naked message hammering and bare emotional manipulation. The performances from all involved are strong and the visuals, while dated, are extraordinary in design. As a blockbuster it strives to nourish the audience with intelligent prospects and ideas, and for the most part the screenplay does a great job at dealing with them both directly and indirectly. The morals of difference and togetherness are all solid, but the general lack in story to match the plot does become noticeable. Though bordering on bonkers at times in the later stages, its handling with the much stronger realist elements actually work well when looked at in the grand scheme of things. Its a glorious, ridiculous, polished but intuitive step into mystery that maintains your attention while keeping you hooked into events, if not the people that surround them.
