While the ultimate failings of Godzilla fall down to the most basic levels of character and human drama, its rousing vision and monstrous range more than make up for a lot of its more dour elements. For every ludicrous or unintentionally daft moment, there’s a rollicking set-piece arriving to rectify it, concluding with one of the most satisfying closing scenes you’re likely to see this year. All of this laid out against a suitably exuberant and heroic score by Alexandre Desplat, Godzilla is an enjoyably massive and entertaining blockbuster that, while lacking a sturdy identity and tone of its own, treats its origins and character with the dignity that they deserve.
