Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Hunt for the Wilderpeople ★★★★

While it doesn't seem like Waititi learned any pacing/structuring lessons from What We Do In the Shadows, he's once again demonstrated a knack for quirky, dry comedy and incredibly endearing characters. As far as adventure/coming of age stories go this one is pretty standard and plays right into predictable story beats. But between Neill's lovable curmudgeon, Dennison's misunderstood "bad egg", some cute dogs, and utterly hilarious supporting performances (Rhys Darby's surprise appearance is the funniest thing I've seen on film this year), this a wonderful, heartwarming film: at times heartbreaking, at times hilarious, but overall optimistic and lovely. It's one of those films that, even if it doesn't resonate with you personally, you can tell it will be monumentally important to someone.
