Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island ★★★

A comic book love letter to an era of film gone by, Skull Island is lush with saturated colors and over the top action sequences. More stylish than one might expect from this era of blockbuster, relative newcomer Vogt-Roberts shows some serious chops with his ability to wield scale, and makes the titular island feel alive. I loved that this wasn't a typical Kong story - it's too preoccupied with fetishizing Vietnam and crafting a ticking clock escape thriller. Far from perfect but good for a late night, this franchise deserves due credit for placing fun above all else.

EDIT: I have a surprising amount of affection for this almost two weeks later. Normally films of this caliber are supremely forgettable even a day after I watch them, but Vogt-Roberts sprinkles enough visual easter eggs and dynamism in the action scenes to make it stand out. Plus, seeing him critique his own movie online gives me a lot of respect for what he was working with and how he approaches the craft. Someone to keep an eye on, for sure.
