The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On

    ★★★★★

Ultra charged-up, relentlessly and aggressively combative - the passion and fire behind this quest for truth and justice is arresting from start to finish. Hara showcases the power of raw investigation and seems entirely uninterested in ethics and professional decorum, which, given the content, was entirely warranted and felt fresh and honest.

More human and sensitive imperialist, nationalist war-time propaganda for sure, but imperialist, nationalist war-time propaganda nonetheless.

A really deep and nuanced commentary on exploitation that really digs into the personal effects and fall out. Sort of like a philosophical soap opera.

Couldn’t shake off the exploitative nature of this one. Absolutely despised the slow motion motif - felt incredibly ill-intentioned.

Raw honesty on full display. Hearing those speak who typically don't have a voice. Provocative and at times confrontational but still carrying a much needed positive and empathetic agenda - Hara fully shows the power and potential of the documentary form.

A really strong social melodrama. Mizoguchi showcases his unique ability to tenderly parse through the truths and find both the harsh realities and the kind, human nature to aspects of society that typically remain hidden or not talked about. This early film from him really separates his voice and vision from his pre-war contemporaries.
