Brody Brittain’s review published on Letterboxd:
Not quite the landmark in animation that The Lego Movie and ITSV are, but Lord + Miller continue to take ideas which are absolutely horrendous on paper and turn them into gold - or in this case, somewhat serviceable silver.
There's absolutely charm to be found here, usually when it's focusing on the more dramatic aspects of the film and the relationship between Katie and her family. Unfortunately, however, a bevy of awkward and cringe-inducing internet humor which feels like they were wrote in 2013 outweigh those charming moments for me. Don't want to spend too much time ranting on those negatives because I'm glad so many people are drawn to this one. Awesome that Katie is a queer character voiced by a queer woman, and hey! Fred Armisen!
