Rye Lane

Rye Lane ★★★★

Rye Lane is one of the most joyful, funny, irresistibly charming, and best films of the year so far. As a sucker for a good rom-com, this was the sort of refreshing and earnest entry that I love to see for this genre. The performances from that of both Dave Jonsson and Vivian Oparah are so fabulous and I really hope to see them in many more projects following this one. The two of them infuse so much charm individually, but they are so magnetic on screen with one another too which makes it so easy to invest in this blossoming romance. Raine Allen-Miller is clearly a talent to watch out for behind the camera, injecting so much style and a gorgeous color palette that also really helps this standout from other entries in this genre. The script is also sharp and avoids a lot of the usual rom-com tropes, but even the inevitable outcomes feel genuinely well earned too. I easily fell for these characters and the ensuring romance. It might not reinvent the formula by any means, but it's easily one of the better recent entries and also doesn't even feel like an hour long it flies by so fast. Definitely check this one out on Hulu if you haven't yet. Not to mention a great soundtrack too.
