Will’s review published on Letterboxd:
Wow this was good fun, full of monsters, Chinese sorcery, Kurt Russell, kick-ass action and wacky villains, Big Trouble in Little China is just one great joy ride. It has the feeling of a film where you really wouldn't think you'd be complimenting it but somehow the man behind this John Carpenter manages to let this film not take itself completely seriously.
So the plot is all about a trucker called Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) who must face a few battles if he is to win a centuries old feud in San Francisco's Chinatown. Complete insanity ensues at times and Burton just never gets whats up, but that is why this is so great. Russell's character is kind of wedged in between all this fighting and magic but he is always the guy questioning what the hell is going on, truly one of the funnest heroes to watch.
The cast also includes the likes of Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, James Hong and Kate Burton and all are involved in a fine cast whose characters are what really make this worth watching. It may be completely mixed up but it sure is entertaining, an impressive effort from Carpenter and just one film you might feel is definitely one you'll revisit one day.
