Kashima Paradise 1973
made for an obviously great pairing with heta village. really enjoyed how this established the centrality of kashima’s manufacturing industry and the failure of the peasant/left movement before juxtaposing it to the success of narita’s resistance to japans burgeoning logistics industry.
the focus on giri / gifting was interesting. while I was initially put off by what seemed to be a simplistic “look at the crazy stuff they do in the japanese countryside.” it ultimately seemed to rather function as an example of the ways in which pre-capitalist rituals become subsumed and spread across different stratifications of society into technologies of debt.
good movie 👍
