I know, I know…. The acting here is pretty uneven, but they’re still speaking the fallen genius’ dialogue. I’m about halfway through Allen’s filmography at this point and I don’t really see a point in stopping. Sure, it feels icky sometimes, but it’s tough for me to completely cancel someone while folks are still celebrating Chaplin. It’ll be interesting to see how the film community views his catalog over the rest of my lifetime.

RIP Michael Apted. Health problems and the fragility of life are a near ubiquitous theme for nearly every subject. The editing is once again quite masterful, but, let’s be honest, for the most part this entire series depends on the gut-wrenchingly beautiful story of Neil. I’d have to rewatch to be sure, but I’m pretty sure every other subject gets some version of the question “do you see your present self in your 7 year old self?”. Apted doesn’t even…

I am utterly amazed that so many people could've spent so much time, money, and artistic effort to make such a morose, boring, and lifeless movie.

Some really fun musical numbers, an overly simplistic story, and a crazy time travel dream sequence middle act. Way too much Red Skelton and Lucille Ball and nowhere near enough Gene Kelly and Virginia O'Brien. Highlights are Gene Kelly's jaw-dropping dance number and Virginia O'Brien's song "Salome" neither of which had anything to do with the story.
