Unbreakable

Unbreakable

i wish i had known about this film back when i watched man of steel, but wow, this is such a sincere reconstruction of genre. overwhelmingly sincere, which is why i think it’s beautiful. revisiting shyamalan, it seems that at first glance he’s fascinated at the intrusion of the metaphysical into ordinary existence, utilizing the medium’s capability of artifice in order to do so. he does all of this, too, in such a tender and caring way, pacing the events in a slow flow. the sixth sense doesn’t hold up after its re-contextualizing, but i think this film definitely will. at the end, the more formal dramatic elements here, loosely guised by superhero genre elements, are richly fulfilled by essentially collapsing into each other, collapsing it all into the frame.

i predict this’ll be my favorite of shyamalan’s films.
