Yes, this is not as timeless as some of Miyazaki's previous efforts, and I do see why people love to poke fun at the sappy ending, but man... as far as I'm concerned, he can get away with it. Maybe he's the only one who can. Ending a movie like this. It just feels so unabashedly pure and honest and beautiful... messy third act be damned.
