There's a lot to be said about this film, but the absolute most important thing is that Lon Chaney's makeup is fucking great, even by today's standard. The intertitles describe "his face is like leprous parchment, yellow skin strung tight over protruding bones"...and that's kind of the perfect description. He is just straight up ghoulish, it's fantastic.
Beyond that...I mean it's a well constructed movie. It may be a two hour long silent movie scored by orchestra (super inappropriately, in a couple of places), but it works. There's a weird, deformed monsterman living in a Paris Opera House who's fallen in love - what more do you want?
