this was just brilliant - both deeply profound and just extremely funny in every way possible; simultaneously bizarre and humane in the portrayal of it’s one-of-a-kind subjects. the titular pawnshop felt like a portal into another realm for me, and I couldn’t help feeling that this is what it is for the inhabitants of the poverty-stricken mining district in the film, too. it’s a microcosm, an encyclopedia of its time and place written in trinkets. a ghost town momentarily rejuvenated by a building filled with ghost objects.
