this was just brilliant - both deeply profound and just extremely funny in every way possible; simultaneously bizarre and humane in the portrayal of it’s one-of-a-kind subjects. the titular pawnshop felt like a portal into another realm for me, and I couldn’t help feeling that this is what it is for the inhabitants of the poverty-stricken mining district in the film, too. it’s a microcosm, an encyclopedia of its time and place written in trinkets. a ghost town momentarily rejuvenated by a building filled with ghost objects.

Great Freedom 2021
thought this would be a bit more but then maybe it’s because we have gotten so many good films that talk about queer history in recent years that my expectations are by proxy slightly too high? this is very well made and beautifully shot though, and the nuances of the characters are translated into the screen with admirable ease. also ❤️ franz rogowski ❤️
