    "You didn't invent my sadness"

This is the film that C'mon C'mon wishes it was. Cรฉline Sciamma doesn't need intellectual posturing or a smug display of artistic self-indulgence to get across her point. She is able to navigate enormous, weighty topics in the smallest, most intimate of ways. This poignant minimalism is at the heart of every one of her films and never has it been more effective than here, her most stripped-back film to date.

A claustrophobic chamber piece. A psychological horror. An unconventional haunted house tale. All things that you wouldn't expect from a film about Princess Diana but then we've come to expect the unexpected from a Pablo Larraรญn biopic.

Once again blurring the lines between fact and fiction, Larraรญn gets under your skin by breaking down our own perceived reality to show the hidden reality of his subject. Distant yet astonishingly intimate, he builds up a solid artifice only to knock itโ€ฆ

The coloured lights that festoon the background of almost every scene, lulling us into a false sense of security. A dazzling distraction from the deepest, darkest, deceptions of high society. The lines between fantasy and reality dissolving in their reflection. This is a film of glossy artifice. It's the illusion of control. Being sold on a dream until it becomes indistinguishable from everyday life. Where do you turn when it fractures? When you lose touch? Everything might be as it seems. Until it's not, of course. But was it ever?

This is a fucking mess of a movie and I wouldn't have it any other way. A bizarro mash-up of increasingly ludicrous, genre-heavy plot points delivered as a series of PlayStation cutscenes only to end with some absolutely phenomenal Woo-like action sequences that might be some of the best I've ever seen.

Love, love, looooove Geena Davis in this and Samuel L. Jackson playing a goofy, down-on-his-luck sidekick is my favourite flavour of Sam. Both of their performances are the key to losing yourself in this nonsensical world. I draw the line at naming your lead villain 'Timothy' though. That's a step too far.

Having just recently finished the book, this was my first foray into Dune on screen and what a feast for the eyes it was. Visually stunning, even at its most bleak and forboding. I legit welled up during the sandworm harvester scene because it was so well crafted I couldn't believe what I was watching. The scale of it all. The detail in the design. It's a jawdropping feat of filmmaking.

Okay. Let's put the twee trivialisation of the Troubles to one side for a second. We'll get back to that later. But I thought this was supposed to be visually stunning? It looks like it was filmed on an old set they had lying around in the Coronation Street art department. Everything about it felt cheap. I swear at one point I saw the whites blow out mid-scene. There was very little texture or depth to the black and whiteโ€ฆ
