The only film I’ve ever given five stars despite my eyes rolling out of my head on several occasions, I am and will aways be a sucker for these indie offbeat coming of age bullshit.

Very rare to come by something so effortlessly original, charming and funny. Cheryl Dunne has got amazing screen presence and you can tell her hands are all over this.

There's such amazing intertextuality and the history lesson you get here is more of a breeze than a drag. You don't really realise it and the mix between docu and drama is wonderful. This is truly a landmark in queer, documentary and black filmmaking.

This film looks gorgeous and is nicely shot. It does everything by the book and drags a little bit but worth a watch just for how enthralling Liv Ullman is in every scene she's in.

Wow. Brilliant companion film to Come and See. (incidentally directed by Sheptiko's husband.)

The senseless, shame and brutality of the world is shown to a tee. Her fillmaking philosophy is one that puts her nicely alongside the likes of Dreyer and Bresson and the perfomances match that too.

Parallels to Dostoyevski's Alyosha, Christ's death march to Golgotha, and Judas's onset of madness due to guilt, are all fascinatingly portrayed.

A cold film both literally and figuratively. This is necessary and devastatingyl beautiful filmmaking.

I've seen a fair few films in my time but hands down I've never personally related to a film more than this gem right now. Some of the conversations Tony has with his mum, I've had in real life with my mine. It's a great feeling to be represented but also makes you unequivocally uncomfortable at some of the shit the characters have to put up with.

It's a sweet as fuck coming of age and reactionary portrayal of black…

Why is this a 4.0 on letteboxd?

While yes this is better, and funnier than the last offering, that's not a hard feat to surpass. I felt no real ounce of emotion during these two hours, it just passed me by. Throwing everything in a script and hoping something will land is not the way to do it. Outlandish doesn't mean it's going to be funny. Why would I care about these characters if you decide to skip any ounce…
