    this movie sucks ass. it wants so hard to be a Smart Adaptation and aims squarely at the naysayers who turn their nose up at anything that isn't the original japanese property and falls on its ass all the harder for it. instead of being major kusanagi the main character is named major killian. kill is right there in the name, you see. it's symbolic.

    my uncontroversial take is that this film is a masterpiece and my maybe controversial take is that it's perhaps the only truly great hosoda film so far.

    this is maybe my favorite coming-of-age film. the main character, makoto, sucks so much in such a specific and relatable way; she's selfish, rude, and irritable in the way basically all of us were as teens. then she gets pancaked by a train.
